Oil on oak panel painting of a French revolutionary soldier, a member of the Armées républicaines françaises. Rendered in a loose, naturalistic style, the painting likely dates from the latter part of the 19th century - but precisely captures all of the features for which the members of the revolutionary armies were famous: the white waistcoat and pantaloons, navy great coat and extravagant bicorne hat, and, of course, fearsome mustache. I paired the wood panel with a wood-and-stucco frame also from the late 1800s.
Oil on oak panel.
