Lepoittevin Marine Oil Painting from the Early 19th Century

$6,000.00

A marine tableau, oil on wood board, by the French Romantic painter Eugène Lepoittevin (1806-1870). The signature “Poitevin” appears in the lower right: our painter seems to have gone by a handful of variations on his family name. His original surname was Potdevin, his father then changed the family name to Lepoittevin, and in the oeuvre of the artist his name appears variously Le Poittevin, Poidevin, and Poitevin. He seems to have developed quite a fondness for seascapes and marine tableaux in the 1830s and 40s, and while this piece is undated, it can be safely surmised that it dates from that period. The sea and sky are calm for a change, and the painting gives an effect of sunlit ennui. Where rough seas CAN be seen, perhaps a bit, are in the sublime frame, which is carved in the shape of waves.

Oil on woodboard, frame measures: 58 x 109 cm.
