Gilded Bronze Candlesticks from French Restauration Era

$1,710.00

A pair of candlesticks in chiselled fire-gilt bronze from the French Empire or early Restauration Era. The pair, exemplifying the neoclassical iconography so popular in the Napoleonic Age, features a lion’s-paw-tripod base on a plinth complemented with a foliage shaft, acanthus leaves, palm leaves, and classically-decorated cups (note the lilies) compete with bobeches. Each candle is comprised of eight independent pieces, not the usual two or three, an indicator of fine quality (more is better). Note the interplay of matte and brilliant made possible only by the the technique of fire gilding.

Measures: 310 x 130 x 115 mm.
