A very rare oil-on-copper portrait of a French officer from Louis Philippe period of 1830-48. Paintings on copper sheeting are typically found only among the genre of small devotional works of under about 8in/20cm in maximum dimension. I’ve come across very few medium-sized or larger portraits in my decades of collecting that were priced at less than $5000. On the other hand, there are some losses to the paint layer, but because these losses allow the copper surface to show through, they can be seen as kind of *patina* - a positive, not a negative! His coat is richly decorated and his sideburns of the Romantic cast of the period. The frame is original to the painting, and has an exquisite incised design and gorgeous patina of its own.
Oil on copper.
